🍪 Crispy deep-fried Oreos

Deep-fried Oreos are a comforting carnival treat that came to be around the early 2000s and has gained popularity over the years. Surprisingly, we’ve never had the privilege of trying them, but as soon as we did, we couldn’t wait to share our homemade version!

We seriously can’t get enough of the taste and texture —the crispy, golden-brown batter gives way to a warm, gooey Oreo. The contrast between the crunchy exterior and the soft, creamy cookie will win anyone’s heart over (trust us).

The pancake batter comes together in a flash, and this recipe is incredibly easy to customize (more down below). For the best result, we recommend dusting your fried Oreos with powdered sugar or adding a drizzle of chocolate sauce. You’ll love each and every bite!

🌱 Are fried Oreos vegan?

Traditional deep-fried Oreos are not usually vegan due to dairy and eggs found in the batter. However, we made this recipe vegan-friendly with just a few easy substitutes:

  • Soy milk: We use plain, unsweetened soy milk instead of cow’s milk in the batter.
  • Eggs: Instead of eggs, we add a bit of vegetable oil. You don’t need anything else!

While not officially marketed as vegan, the original Oreo cookies don’t contain any animal-derived products. However, cross-contamination is always possible during production, so it’s ultimately up to you to decide.

🛒 Ingredients & substitutions

  • All-purpose flour: Provides the base for the batter and creates a crispy coating. For a gluten-free option, try a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.
  • Cane sugar: Adds a delicate sweetness to the batter. We use unrefined cane sugar, but you can use any vegan-friendly granulated sugar.
  • Baking powder: Acts as a leavening agent, giving the batter a light, airy texture.
  • Salt: Enhances the other ingredients, adding depth of flavor.
  • Soy milk: Use plain, unsweetened soy milk for the best result. You can also use other plant-based milk, like cashew, almond, or oat milk.
  • Vanilla extract: Adds sweet, creamy notes and enhances the flavor of the batter. Pure vanilla extract offers the most potent taste, but artificial will work in a pinch.
  • Neutral oil: Helps create a smooth, richly-flavored batter and to fry the Oreos. Canola, peanut, soybean, or vegetable oil all work well here.
  • Oreos: The star of the show, providing a delicious chocolate and cream filling. Experiment with different Oreo flavors or use a gluten-free or vegan-certified alternative like Simple Mills or Lenny & Larry’s.

📝 How to make deep-fried Oreos

Step 1: Prepare the batter

Combine dry ingredients in one bowl and wet ingredients in another, then mix them together until smooth. Be careful not to overmix the batter as you don’t want too many gluten bonds to form.

Step 2: Heat the oil

Let the batter rest while you heat some vegetable oil up in a heavy-bottomed pot. It’s helpful to have a deep-fry thermometer for this part, but you can also test a piece of the batter. If it floats immediately and sizzles fairly vigorously, you’re good to go.

Step 3: Fry the Oreos

Dip each Oreo in the batter, ensuring it’s fully coated. Carefully add the coated Oreos to the hot oil and fry them in batches, flipping halfway, until golden brown and crispy.

This goes without saying, but always take precautions around hot oil! Use proper utensils and keep a safe distance to avoid any splatters.

Step 4: Drain and dust

Remove the Oreos from the oil with tongs or a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Optionally, sprinkle powdered sugar over the deep-fried Oreos for a sweet finish. Happy eating!

🍦What to serve with fried Oreos

  • Powdered sugar: Adds a sweet, frosty, melt-in-your-mouth touch to the cookies.
  • Chocolate sauce: Drizzle some over the top or serve it on the side for dipping.
  • Caramel sauce: Try our vegan cajeta for a rich and decadent dipping idea.
  • Vegan whipped cream: A dairy-free alternative to whipped cream, perfect for dolloping on top.
  • Fresh fruit: Balance the richness with a side of fresh berries or sliced fruit. You can even try a strawberry or blueberry compote.
  • Crushed nuts: Sprinkle some crushed peanuts or pecans over the top for added crunch and flavor.

🌡️ Storage & reheating

Deep-fried Oreos always taste best when eaten fresh. However, if you have any leftovers, follow these storage tips:

  • Fridge: Store the fried Oreos in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Freezer: We don’t recommend freezing the cooked cookies since the texture will become soft and mushy once thawed.
  • Reheating: Reheat deep-fried Oreos in an oven at 350F for 5-7 minutes or until warmed through. Alternatively, you can reheat them in an air fryer for 5 minutes at 340F.
  • Prep ahead: Although we don’t suggest dipping the Oreos in advance, you can make the batter the night before and store it in the fridge.

♻️ Variations

  • Oreo flavors: Try using different flavors of Oreos like peanut butter, mint, double fudge, or birthday cake.
  • Stuffed fried Oreos: Add a layer of peanut butter or vegan cream cheese between two Oreos before dipping and frying them.
  • Spices: Add cinnamon, allspice, or nutmeg to the batter for a warm, spicy twist.
  • Gluten-free: Use gluten-free all-purpose flour and gluten-free sandwich cookies.
  • Mini deep-fried Oreos: Use mini Oreo cookies for bite-sized treats.
  • Chocolate-dipped: Dip the fried Oreos in melted vegan chocolate and allow them to set.

🧑‍🍳 Top tips

  • Monitor oil temperature: Use an oil thermometer to ensure the temperature stays between 350-375 degrees F throughout the cooking process.
  • Fry in batches: Overcrowding can quickly reduce the temperature of the oil. It’s best to fry the cookies in smaller batches rather than all at once.
  • Drain the oil: Use paper towels to absorb any excess oil, which will prevent the cookies from becoming soggy.
  • Serve immediately: Enjoy your deep-fried Oreos warm for the best taste and texture.

💬 FAQ

Can I bake fried Oreos instead of frying them?

Fried Oreos have a distinct taste and texture that can’t be emulated by baking them. Of course, you can bake them, but the recipe won’t turn out as intended. If you’re stuck on trying it, bake them at 375F for 10-12 minutes, or until the batter is golden brown.

Can I use an air fryer?

Even though it may be tempting to use an air fryer for this recipe, the air fryer doesn’t perform very well when battered foods are added to it. It gets very messy and typically ends up with undesirable results.

Why are my fried Oreos soggy?

Soggy deep-fried Oreos usually happen as a result of overcrowding the pot or not using hot enough oil. This is why it’s important to use an oil thermometer and fry in small batches.
