Dairy and Matcha - Why The Two Don't Mix (2024)

If you're not a Matcha Green Tea drinker already, youmay find it quite strange toconsideradding any kind of milk to your green tea.

It's more common than you may think! Matcha is increasingly enjoyed around the world in theform of a creamyMatcha Latte.

However, didyou know that the type of milk you use affects the absorption of the antioxidants found in Matcha?

So which milk is best for a Matcha Latte?

If you do like to drink Matcha latte style, we recommend ditching the dairy and choosing plant-based milk instead.

Dairy and Matcha - Why The Two Don't Mix (2)

Here are the key reasons why:

  • Dairy Milk contains a protein called Casein which binds itself to the Catechins. Catechins are plant-based compounds that are antioxidant-rich and are found in Matcha. These Catechins help prevent cell damage and reduce free radicals in the body, as well as offering anti-inflammatory,cardiovascular and metabolic benefits. Perfect for the body tosoak up for increased overall health and wellness.
  • If you add the dairy protein Casein to these Catechins, it blocks theabsorption of antioxidants by the body and they just flush right through. What a shame to waste all that goodness, don't you think?

If you are drinking Matcha for health reasons, we suggest drinking Matcha with just hot or cold water for maximum absorption of nutrients.

How to make it with just water?

  • Simply measure out two bamboo scoops of sifted Matcha
  • Add water (no hotter than 80 degrees)
  • Whisk or shake (in our Tea Shaker) to combine and enjoy!

But if you're more partial to a creamyMatcha Latte, we recommend youswap out the dairy milkfor plant-based milk. Some of our favourites are Macadamia, Oat and Almond - we are spoilt for choice with what's on offer in the supermarket these days!

There's absolutely nothing wrong with mixing up your Matcha routine too! Sometimes we like to drink Matcha straight up and sometimes only a creamy Latte will do.

One key point we would like tomake even if you are drinking Matcha in a latte is to pick always bright green, good quality Matcha to use.

From personal experience, far too many Matcha Latte drinks on offer at cafes are too milky and sweet to mask the poor quality Matcha being used.

The latte should still look bright green and that smooth vegetal signature taste of Matcha should still shine through. It shouldn't taste so milky or sweet that you can't even taste that delicious green goodness.

Our two kinds of Matcha suit either option, you will enjoy the smooth taste and know you’re drinking in all the goodness too!
