Best available: Players to watch so far this spring
The 2023-24 transfer portal cycle is on pace to be another record-setting one, with 2,300 scholarship college football players already in the portal at the FBS level. So far, more than 1,400 have announced commitments as the 14-day spring transfer window continues from April 16-30.
Which big names do you need to know ahead of the portal deadline? In an effort to help you keep track of who’s going where and which top transfers are still on the market, The Athletic ranks the best available players in the portal.

DL Tyler Baron back on the market
Louisville DL Tyler Baron has re-entered the portal as a grad transfer. Baron, a 19-game starter at Tennessee, was one of the top edge defenders in the portal in December and initially committed to Ole Miss before flipping to Louisville. After going through spring with the Cardinals, Baron is now back on the market. This one has been rumored for a few weeks. Louisville has now lost four scholarship transfers it brought in for January.

Nebraska makes a portal move
Nebraska makes its first portal move of the spring in landing linebacker Vince Genatone from Montana. He spent two seasons with the Grizzlies after a decorated prep career in North Platte, Neb. Notably, Genatone clocked a sub-10.5-second 100-meter dash at 220 pounds.
Miami's Jayden Wayne enters portal
Miami second-year edge rusher Jayden Wayne, a top-100 recruit in the 2023 cycle, has announced he’s entering the transfer portal. Wayne started one game last season and was expected to be a rotation player this coming season.
Miami has had eight players leave the program since the start of the spring. The most notable are starting defensive tackle Jared Harrison-Hunte, a sixth-year senior with 22 career starts, and leading rusher Henry Parrish Jr., who returned to Ole Miss.
The Hurricanes picked up two defensive tackle transfers with plenty of starting experience in December in C.J. Clark (N.C. State) and Marley Cook (Middle Tennessee State) and signed seven defensive linemen in the 2024 class, headlined by five-star Justin Scott from Chicago.
Terrance Brooks leaving Texas
Texas cornerback Terrance Brooks has announced he's entering the transfer portal. That's a little bit of a surprise. Brooks started 13 games as a true sophom*ore for the Longhorns last season and grabbed three interceptions. If the former top-100 recruit does depart, what does Texas do about the starting spot opposite Malik Muhammad? All-Big 12 defensive back Jahdae Barron could move over there. I could see the Longhorns making a run at Arizona's Tacario Davis, the top cornerback in the portal, given co-DC Johnny Nansen's ties there.
Big Ten numbers so far
Now halfway through the spring portal period, a total of 354 Big Ten players have entered since early December. Michigan State has the most (40), followed by Indiana (38). Purdue (30) and Washington (29). Penn State has the fewest portal departures (10), followed by Iowa (11) and Northwestern (11).
In other categories, 226 Big Ten transfers have found new homes, 30 withdrew from the portal to return while two left for the NFL. So far, Big Ten schools have added 158 commits through the portal, combining the winter and spring periods.
Michigan State's Derrick Harmon back in portal
Michigan State DL Derrick Harmon has re-entered the transfer portal. Harmon initially put his name in the portal in December and had Oregon, Ohio State and Auburn battling for him but opted to withdraw and stay with the Spartans' new coaching staff. Now the 15-game starter is back on the market and probably knows where he's heading after already taking official visits to all three of those schools.

Micah Bell leaving Notre Dame

Rising sophom*ore cornerback Micah Bell is departing Notre Dame. He would have been a reserve this fall for the Irish, a former four-star prospect with very good speed.
Wesley Walker re-enters the portal, leaving Louisville
(Sam Upshaw Jr. / USA Today)
Louisville put together one of the most impressive portal hauls in December coming off its run to the ACC title game but just lost a third player from its transfer class with safety Wesley Walker re-entering the portal. Walker was a 10-game starter at Tennessee last season and is now back on the market as a grad transfer. The Cardinals had already lost running back Peny Boone and offensive lineman Reuben Unije to the portal last week, though they may be able to get Boone back on board.
Portal numbers so far
We're officially one week into the spring transfer window. Here are the stats from the first seven days of portal activity:
494 scholarship players entered the portal
- 25 percent have been repeat transfers
- 20 percent have been grad transfers
- 48 percent leaving Power 5 schools, 52 percent leaving G5
The position with the most transfers: defensive line (95).
So far, there have only been 26 commitments from those 494 players. The next few weeks are going to be wild.
Deacon Hill back in the portal
Iowa QB Deacon Hill has re-entered the transfer portal. The former Wisconsin transfer started nine games for the Hawkeyes in 2023 after starter Cade McNamara went down with a torn ACL and threw for 1,152 yards with five TDs and eight interceptions. Iowa finished No. 132 out of 133 nationally in scoring offense but still won 10 games, including six of Hill's starts.

Jermayne Lole commits to Oklahoma
(Photo: Jamie Rhodes / USA Today)
Good pickup for Oklahoma tonight: Louisville transfer DL Jermayne Lole has committed to the Sooners. He's a 6-foot-3, 310-pound veteran defensive tackle who brings more than 1,800 career snaps to the table from his time at UL and Arizona State. Lole has dealt with injuries and missed nearly the entire 2022 season with an elbow injury, but if he can stay healthy this season he'll certainly help strengthen the Sooners' defensive front.

Big pick up for Colorado
Ohio State transfer running back Dallan Hayden has committed to Colorado. He's going to be an important pickup for the Buffs.
Hayden rushed for 663 yards and six touchdowns over two seasons with the Buckeyes, including three 100-yard performances as a freshman, but was stuck behind two studs on the depth chart this spring.
With Colorado only returning Dylan Edwards and Sy'Veon Wilkerson at the running back position, Hayden will have an opportunity to earn a significant workload and give CU's offense the kind of pass-run balance it clearly lacked in 2023 when the team produced an FBS-low 827 rushing yards.
Texas focusing on defensive line help
(Photo: Kirby Lee / USA Today)
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian acknowledged after the Longhorns’ spring game on Saturday that he has a clear need with his spring portal shopping.
“The depth on the defensive line is not where we need it to be,” Sarkisian said, “and so hopefully we can address that. That’s a bit concerning.”
Texas picked up a commitment on Monday from Arizona transfer Bill Norton, a 6-foot-6, 300-pound defensive tackle who started at nose for the Wildcats last season after transferring in from Georgia. New Texas co-defensive coordinator Johnny Nansen came over from Arizona, so Norton’s pledge was no surprise.
The big get Sark is still chasing would be UCLA DT Jay Toia. Texas hosted him and his younger brother George at its spring game and appears to be in great shape in this recruitment. Toia is currently No. 7 in The Athletic's best available rankings.
Lorando 'Snaxx' Johnson back in portal
Arkansas CB Lorando "Snaxx" Johnson has re-entered the transfer portal. The former Baylor transfer started all 12 games last season for the Razorbacks and recorded 29 tackles, four TFLs, five pass breakups and an interception that he returned for a pick-six. Arkansas brought in Tennessee transfer Doneiko Slaughter this offseason and he'd been competing with Johnson at the nickel spot this spring.
Henry Parrish Jr. headed back to Ole Miss

Former Miami leading rusher Henry Parrish Jr. announced on Twitter on Monday he's headed back to Ole Miss for one last dance. Parrish ran for 625 yards and six touchdowns last season and 1,241 yards and 10 touchdowns on 230 carries in his two years in Coral Gables after transferring from Ole Miss. He was recruited by former Miami assistant Kevin Smith to Ole Miss and then followed him to the Hurricanes. Smith rejoined Lane Kiffin's staff in Oxford in 2023.
Miami's Jared Harrison-Hunte expected to enter portal
Miami is expecting starting defensive tackle Jared Harrison-Hunte, a sixth-year senior with 22 career starts, to enter the transfer portal, according to 247Sports. The Hurricanes picked up two defensive tackle transfers with plenty of starting experience in December in C.J. Clark (N.C. State) and Marley Cook (Middle Tennessee State) and signed seven defensive linemen in the 2024 class including five-star Justin Scott from Chicago.
Harrison-Hunte’s expected departure leaves Miami under the 85-player scholarship limit. Second-year linebacker Kaleb Spencer, backup quarterback Jacurri Brown, reserve running back TreVonte Citizen, reserve offensive lineman Logan Sagapolu and edge rusher Nyjalik Kelly, a three-game starter in two seasons, have all entered the transfer portal since the end of the spring. A few more departures are expected as Miami looks to add depth at running back, defensive line, linebacker and defensive back.

Miami to host RB Damien Martinez
(Photo: Soobum Im-USA Today)
Miami is set to host former Oregon State running back Damien Martinez – one of the top available in the transfer portal – Thursday as his tour for a potential landing spot continues.
Martinez, who ran for 1,185 yards and nine touchdowns last fall, has stopped by Arizona and Mississippi State and is expected to decide after his trip to Coral Gables, a source confirmed to The Athletic.
“Man, Mario has been persistent,” Martinez told AthlonSports. “The whole staff has been making me and my family feel like family even before the visit. As everyone has seen, they came down two times before I went there.”
Martinez told Athlon he thinks he fits Arizona’s scheme easier than Mississippi State’s, but the Bulldogs “create bigger run lanes given the fact they run a spread offense.”
Miami has five scholarship running backs on the roster, but sophom*ore Mark Fletcher and redshirt sophom*ore Ajay Allen – the two most experienced backs on the team – missed the spring recovering from injury.
Wisconsin adds depth to O-line
Wisconsin adds some needed depth on the offensive line with former Vanderbilt lineman Leyton Nelson announcing his commitment from the portal. Nelson played 26 snaps at tackle last season under current Badgers line coach AJ Blazek at Vandy.
Another Colorado departure
Colorado redshirt freshman DB Adam Hopkins entering the transfer portal this morning means that, by my count, the Buffaloes are at 72 scholarship players for their 2024 roster. Deion Sanders and his staff can go pick up at least 10 more transfers over the next few weeks to fill out their remaining needs. For the second year in a row, this team is going to have more newcomers than returning scholarship players entering the season.
